Alliance for Period Supplies in the News

NBC-2 News Features APS of SWFL

Since 2019, the Alliance for Period Supplies of SWFL has helped more than 41,000 women and girls in need. Through partnerships with nonprofits in Collier and Lee counties, we’re working each day to ensure a period is the end of a sentence, not a woman or girl’s ability to participate in life.

Thank You Lisa Spooner and NBC-2 News for Reporting on Period Poverty in Southwest Florida.

On May 19, the NBC Nightly News Team, featuring anchor Lisa Spooner, did an investigative report on the hidden consequences of Period Poverty and its devastating impact on women and girls in Collier and Lee Counties. The report featured the Alliance for Period Supplies of SWFL as well as Amy Fuller, Instructor of Sociology at FGCU and the student body president.

Period Poverty Creates Anxiety for 13 Year Old.

"I used to have so much anxiety about getting my period, that they had almost stopped completely. I was scared to bleed through during school and embarrass myself and ruin my pants at the same time. There were days I faked sick just to stay home because I could feel my period about to start. Having access to period supplies has really changed my life. I didn't know that your period shouldn't cause you that much stress."

COVID Impacted Period Product Access

Students in the United States continue to face barriers in accessing menstrual hygiene products, and a new report found the COVID-19 pandemic increased barriers to access.

The report, commissioned by Thinx and PERIOD, found 23% of students struggled to afford period products. The survey of 1,010 students, conducted by SKDK between April 26 and May 2, also found that 21% of students surveyed said they thought being back at school made it easier to access period products.

The Alliance for Period Supplies of SWFL is proud to partner with Collier County Public Schools and Lee County Public Schools to ensure menstruating students have access to period products while they’re in school.
