FGCU Students Tackle Period Poverty

August Service-Learning Fair at FGCU

FGCU students kicked off their recent return to campus by attending the service-learning fair on August 30th. A total of 649 students crowded into Cohen Center to meet 55 community partner organizations and learn about service-learning opportunities for the school year.

All FGCU students must complete at least 80 hours of service learning and civic engagement to fulfill their undergraduate requirements.

The Alliance for Period Supplies of SWFL had a booth at the event and received a lot of attention from students. Over 90 students signed up to learn more about Period Poverty and to help the Alliance for Period Supplies of SWFL advance our mission.

"Period Poverty was Upsetting to Me"

Emilee, FGCU Student and APS of SWFL Campus Ambassador

"As soon as I found out about the Alliance for Period Supplies of SWFL and their mission to help prevent period poverty, I was eager to help out. I knew period poverty existed, but I had never known the huge number of people who do not have access to period supplies or cannot afford them. It was surprising and upsetting to me that this was such a huge issue, so I really wanted to help.

I volunteered with the Alliance at the Meals of Hope Mobile Food Pantry in Naples and was so surprised to see how many women need period supplies. This is clearly a serious women's rights issue in our community, and I feel good about helping this important cause."
